Research Progress on the Treatment of Colorectal Cancer Based on Collateral Disease Theory

Abstract

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a common malignant tumor of the digestive system, with persistently high incidence and mortality rates worldwide. Its treatment is challenged by critical issues such as recurrence, metastasis, and chemoresistance. In recent years, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has demonstrated unique advantages in the treatment of malignant tumors. As an important component of the TCM theoretical system, collateral disease theory has shown significant potential value in the treatment of CRC and provides novel perspectives for elucidating its pathogenesis and developing therapeutic strategies. This article systematically reviews the core concepts of collateral disease theory and its relevance to CRC, summarizes CRC treatment strategies based on collateral disease theory—including the application of therapeutic principles, herbal prescriptions, and external treatment methods—and discusses their clinical advantages and existing limitations. By integrating findings from modern medical research with TCM syndrome differentiation and treatment experience, this review aims to provide a theoretical basis and practical reference for the integrated treatment of CRC with traditional Chinese and Western medicine.
