Abstract

Objective: This study aims to explore the therapeutic efficacy and feasibility of home application of Wuzhuyu (Evodia rutaecarpa) hot compress package combined with circular massage for functional constipation. Methods: A total of 186 patients with functional constipation from Shapingba District Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital of Chongqing were randomly divided into an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group received Wuzhuyu hot compress package therapy on the abdomen combined with circular massage, while the control group used glycerin enema for laxation. The effectiveness and safety of the therapies were evaluated by comparing the one-hour defecation success rate, constipation symptom score (CSS), quality of life score (SF-36), and the incidence of adverse reactions between the two groups. Results: The one-hour defecation success rate in the experimental group (98.92%) was significantly higher than that in the control group (74.19%), with a statistically significant reduction in CSS (P<0.001) and a significant improvement in SF-36 scores (P<0.001). Only two patients in the experimental group experienced mild skin redness, which resolved without special treatment, and no serious adverse reactions occurred. Additionally, 56 patients achieved home defecation independently after discharge. Conclusion: Wuzhuyu hot compress package combined with circular massage demonstrates significant efficacy and high safety in treating functional constipation. It is easy to operate and can be applied at home, making it a non-pharmacological treatment method worthy of promotion.
