Research Progress on Acupuncture Treatment for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Abstract

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), commonly referred to as autism, has a high prevalence rate. This rate has been increasing year by year. The pathogenesis of ASD involves multiple factors. Overall, however, a clear understanding remains lacking. Studies indicate that acupuncture, as a therapy within traditional Chinese medicine external treatments, shows significant effects on core symptoms of ASD. Its safety and efficacy have been widely recognized. Although acupuncture is not a primary treatment for autism, it demonstrates certain potential in alleviating specific symptoms and improving quality of life for patients. Acupuncture plays an important role currently and will continue to do so in the future.
