Abstract

With the advancement of information technology and the implementation of the New Curriculum, modern education has imposed new demands on teachers, requiring them to move beyond traditional roles and adopt new professional identities. Teachers are no longer merely transmitters of knowledge or deliverers of pre-organized content; instead, they are expected to guide and facilitate learners rather than simply instruct them. In essence, the transition of the teacher’s role entails a shift in pedagogical beliefs. Teachers should therefore consider how to promote this transition and how to implement student-centered instruction that stimulates learners’ enthusiasm. Constructivism holds that learning is not a passive process but an active construction of meaning by the learner. The learner is the primary agent of information processing and the constructor of meaning, rather than merely a passive recipient of external stimuli or a subject to be implanted with knowledge. Situation, collaboration, conversation, and meaning construction constitute the four essential elements of constructivist learning environments. Accordingly, teachers should relinquish their role as authorities and reposition themselves as facilitators or assistants in learners’ meaning construction. This paper briefly reviews the learning and teaching theories of constructivism. By comparing traditional teacher roles and analyzing the significance of constructivism in teaching, it proposes instructional design principles from the teacher’s perspective and examines the new roles of teachers under the constructivist view.
